Woodruff at Newberry 9/28/2018

The Wolverines are back in action this week as they begin region play on the road at Newberry. The Wolverines are a solid 4-1 and Newberry 2-3 and struggling on defense, but it should be a good game when these two teams square off.

Woodruff is coming off a tough 42-31 loss to Chapman two weeks ago, their only loss, in a game that was closer than the final score. The Wolverines are dynamic on offense and solid on defense, and they hope to be able to put points on the board against a Newberry defense allowing over 42 points per game. Keegan Halloran is the steady hand at quarterback, Demi Dale and Jonathan Alexander carry the load at running back, and Cole Fuller and Omarion McKelvin are as good as they come at wide receiver. The Wolverines will need everyone to step up and play well as they kick off their question for their first region title since 2015.

Newberry, meanwhile, has been in rebuilding mode after massive losses to graduation. The Bulldogs are giving up a lot of points defensive and have particularly struggled mightily on special teams where they have given up numerous kick returns for touchdowns. Still, Newberry is dangerous on offense led by the athletic Zay Chalmers at quarterback and Ahmorae Wilmore, an enormous running back that carries the load behind a big offensive line. The Bulldogs are averaging 26 points per game but that number has been trending upward the last several weeks. Newberry is 2-0 at home and will play hard to defend their home turf this week.

You can never count out a Phil Strickland coached team and the Wolverines will not take Newberry lightly. The fact remains, however, that the Bulldogs have not put everything together yet and the Wolverines have played well all year. After the bye week Woodruff should be well rested and ready to roll. In the end special teams will hurt Newberry again and the Wolverine offense will get back in gear, making big plays in the second half. When the clock hits zero....

Phil Strickland aside, Newberry just isn't very good this year for whatever reason. Game shouldn't be close.

we all know if STRICKLAND had the athletes
they would be in every game.i don't care
how good the coach is when you don't have
the athletes you won't be a contender.some
schools seem to never run short of above average
athletes year after year after year.some fans just
don't get that.

Woodruff should have no problem. We didn't punt once in our game with them and they are slow in the defensive backfield. On offense they are ok but struggle to keep drives going.
