CONGRATULATIONS to Chester. You showed up and took this game. This season was overall a positive one for 3A football. Can’t deny that Dillon raised the bar and put forth a formidable challenge to the rest of the field....but while a dynasty can be cool; it’s definitely more provocative to see good rivalries and challenges arise. Chapman answered the call a few seasons ago...but it was certainly enjoyable to see that there were several teams who could have ended up in the title game this year. The field has stepped up and answered the challenge. Hopefully, the trend will continue. That doesn’t mean the likes of a Dillon or a Chapman are going away, but parity is growing across the board in 3A which only improves the competition. Trust & believe that Dillon and even Chapman will respond to the push from underneath and will only push back and find ways to continue to grow and improve; yet the rest of field continues to push back and answer the call so that in any given year (even though a #1 & #2 has to be listed), any of the top 5-7 teams can challenge for the prize. It was good to see the push this year, not only from Chester, but also from Union, Camden, Wade Hampton, Hanahan, May River, Southside, Broome, Gilbert, Strom Thurmond. It’s good to see the competition thicken. Gives us something to which to look forward next season as well as in the years to come....
Again, hats off to Chester on an undefeated season.......already in anticipation of what next year holds.......
He left after state final with Chester in ’07. Now, Victor Floyd plans to hang around. Chester coach Victor Floyd took a new job after the Cyclones’ 2007 state final loss, and he said last week that he felt he left multiple potential state championships on the table. But Floyd is back at Chester and finally won that elusive championship Dec. 7, 2018. He plans on sticking around to win a few more.
Chester entered Friday night’s title game 14-0, but also widely regarded as underdogs. Dillon was undefeated (12-0) too and playing in its seventh straight state title game, having won five of the previous six.
But pedigree didn’t play a single down Friday night at Williams-Brice Stadium.
And any mental advantage the Wildcats had over their opponents evaporated in the game’s first 14 seconds after Brown’s 49-yard TD run on the first offensive play. The Cyclones’ 21-6 halftime lead gave them enough cushion to hold off Dillon when the Wildcats surged in the fourth quarter. Floyd impressed upon his team the importance of starting fast, and that proved true, especially when the Cyclones faded late.
Dillon had all the title game experience, had the better passing attack, but Chester had Floyd’s supreme ability to move his players’ hearts and minds, leaving no brick wall strong enough to resist the Cyclones if he told them to run it over. “I’m sitting here thinking about how we tried to throw that thing away in the fourth,” Floyd said, chuckling. “I think the guys really saw the finish line when we were up 34-12. You know, sometimes it’s a little hard to deal with.” “Floyd said that going to Brunswick made him a better coach by competing against future SEC players, nationally-ranked programs and Hall of Fame coaches.”
Did anyone see any photos or slow motion film of the fumble by Chester that was returned for a Dillon TD. Was the ball carrier not down?
Yea, upon seeing the replay it was a bad call. Had a few of those in the games Friday. Refs make a call then the TV feed on scoreboard shows they we're wrong. The SCHSL needs to do one of two things. Either allow replay decisions to be made at those games, or don't allow any replays showing obvious mistakes on the big screen. Those officials have a tough job, and don't have the luxury of watching the play in slow motion. As there were a couple of fumbles that we're called wrong in the course of the games. Either use the replay to overturn, or confirm. But don't keep showing it to embarrass the officials. Nothing gained from that.

I agree 100%. This was the first year in a long time that there was a lot of parity in the upper state and lower state. That's a very good thing for football. There were a lot more teams that had a chance to make it to the finals. Next year should be just as strong.

Much congratulations to the Chester Cyclones! They came into the game hungry, punched Dillon in the mouth early and sustained their inspired play throughout the game. The Wildcats tried to rally late but the damage had already been done. I must say that I have never seen a Dillon Wildcats team play with such little emotion/enthusiasm. But if you know anything about high school football, look for Jackie Hayes' squad to be right back in the 3A hunt AGAIN in 2019. That's pretty much a given at this point.
