The Dillon Wildcats, who ventured into this season with #bringitback, struck it rich today by winning the program’s fifth state championship in six years and eighth overall.

After last year’s Chapman squad ended Dillon’s SCHSL-record run of consecutive state football titles at four, coach Jackie Hayes’ Wildcats scored 27 unanswered points and returned to glory in this year’s SCHSL Class 3A final against those same Panthers with a 55-27 win at Williams-Brice Stadium.

“Bring it back, that’s what we did,” senior Dillon defensive back Ty’Quan Porter said. “We told people we were going to bring it back, and that’s what we did.”

This is the Wildcats’ seventh state crown under Hayes.

“It’s not about me. It’s about the program, the kids, the coaches and the community,” said Hayes, whose team completed the season at 15-0. “When you’ve got all that working together, big things happen for you.” Today, Porter and the rest of the Wildcats’ defense also had a lot to do with that, turning five of the Panthers’ eight turnovers into scores. Two of eight turnovers were on downs.

Porter, who returned an interception 74 yards for one score and a fumble 39 for another, gave Dillon the lead for good on offense — only after an interception by Jerdarius McDaniel (McDaniel also recovered a fumble by game’s end). Porter scooped up a fumble by Zareon Hayes inside the Panthers’ 5-yard line and scored for a 28-21 lead with 8:29 left in the third quarter.

“(Porter) was big for us tonight,” Jackie Hayes said. “He’s been big for us all year.”

A Zareon Hayes touchdown stretched the lead to 14, and then Porter’s fumble return made it 41-21 with 4:52 left in the third quarter.

Porter’s pick-six accounted for the game’s first points, and Corrian Wright’s 34-yard TD pass from Jay Lester made it 14-0. After Dillon held Chapman on fourth and goal from the 1, Lester then connected with Ahmari Huggins for a 99-yard touchdown and 21-0 advantage. Lester finished today’s game with 240 passing yards and three scores, and Huggins had four catches for 140.

But Chapman quarterback Colton Bailey, who appeared to be injured after trying to tackle Porter on his interception return, willed the Panthers back into the game with three touchdown passes, including two to Richard Tucker. The latter one was made with one second left in the second quarter to tie the game at 21.

At halftime, Jackie Hayes refocused his team.

“I said, ‘Look folks, we’ve got to calm down and just play our game,'” Hayes said. “No mistakes and no stupid penalties, and we were able to do that. We came out fired up in the second half and got a couple of stops on them to start with.”

Bailey did not play in the second half and was replaced by Mikele Colasurdo.

“When (Bailey) went out, it just changed the way we were thinking a little bit,” Hayes said. “We were going to try and pressure the quarterback a little bit more.”Leading 41-21 going into the fourth quarter, the only important decision left was whether to douse Jackie Hayes with the beverage cooler.

That was easy. Of course.

With five seniors in this year’s starting lineup, the Wildcats could very well be set for another string of possible state titles.

With six championship rings as the Wildcats’ coach and another on the way, what’s next for Hayes?

“Try to win some more, I guess,” Hayes laughed.

Congratulations to the Wildcats. I watched the game and thought Dillon completely dominated Chapman. Without spotting Chapman 14 points late in the 2nd qtr (muffed punt and late hit on qb that kept a chapman drive alive), this game was a complete run away.

A lot of teams in 3A will have to step up their games next season if they want to compete for a title.
