That 1996 team truly was a beast. Having witnessed all of the state title teams at Atown...if I had to rate them...that one and the 1971 team would be at the top of the list. Different eras but the 1971 team won 3A in the only year we played there...playoffs were tough but they got it done. The 1996 title game was supposed to be Atown vs BL....the defending champs. IDK what happened but somehow Allendale Fairfax went in there and beat them. AF was no match for us the next week though...35-0. On a side note....the best Abbeville team I have seen that did not win a state was 1998. That team...IMO...was a whisker from as good as 1996. A terrible 1st quarter against Pageland in 3rd round put us in a hole...we climbed back but lost a 29-28 heart breaker on a late two point conversion. The best team did not win that night...probably similar to AF beating BL that night.

The 2002 team, engineered by quarterback Rod Freeman, was a very good team to not win state as well. The Panthers were beaten 21-19 by Carver's Bay in the title game. The 21-6 halftime deficit was just a little too much to overcome.
